Historical Background
A general meeting of 25 June 1762, held following the close of the exhibition, finalised details of a proposed sale of members' works left unsold. Twenty-three artists, including several of the leading names in the Society, allowed their works to be valued secretly by the Exhibition Committee, with any shortfall on sale to be made up from exhibition profits. The auction was held on 23 February 1763 at Langford's rooms in Covent Garden, and the result was a large loss to the Society, with many paintings failing to reach their estimates by large margins. The difference, totalling £122 15s 4d, resulted in the enforced sale of £150 of the Society's stock (minutes of Committee meeting, 28 February 1763).
