He has been received very kindly by
Mr. Jenkins, thanks to the Duke's letter of introduction; he apologises profusely for not writing sooner amd commends the Duke's "feeling for art"; details the works he saw while in Genoa, including works by
Raphael,
Titian,
Paolo Veronese,
Correggio and
Leonardo da Vinci; he admires the work by
Cimabue and
Giotto in the Campo Santo at Pisa; moving on to Florence he saw the Art furthered by
Masaccio and Leonardo, before its ultimate expression in the Vatican Loggia and the Sistine Chapel; he regards the Borghese collection as the best private collection in Europe, it has recently been shut to students by the Prince; luckily he found
Parry there making a full-sized copy of the 'Transfiguration', by
Raphael, as a consequence he used the scaffold to make sketches.
