He has heard of Humphry frequently from his sister and his brother George. Alludes to a romantic attachment involving Humphry. He is glad to hear Humphry's business with Sir John is to be "compromised". He has received Humphry's portrait of his "dear Eliza" and looks forward to receiving pictures of other members of his family.

He has not seen James Grant for nearly two years, as he is in Calcutta. He asks to be remembered to his friend Wilkins. He has a picture of [Shiwallah?] and desires to send a copy to Wilkins. He desires to hear of his friend Smith's safe arrival.

he has made great alterations to his bungalow and the surrounding grounds. He remembers Humphry enjoyed a good claret and was "no enemy to a booze", although these should be only be indulged occasionally.
