The first exhibition in the Society of Artists' new exhibition room in the Strand was held on 13 May 1772. A grand opening had been held on 8 May and the entertainment included a laudatory ode by the Rev.
Evan Lloyd, set to music by James Hook, the organist and composer at Marylebone pleasure gardens.
Content Description
Hook has sent the bills of expenses of the persons attending the ode: the performers had been very pressing for their money, as it was the custom to pay them on the day of performance.
