John Constable, 35 Charlotte Street, to The Revd Mr Trimmer

Constable wrote to the Rev. Henry Scott Trimmer from Hampstead on 12 November 1833 (transcription and notes in John Constable's Correspondence, volume V, edited by R B. Beckett, Suffolk Records Society, 1967, pp. 66-7.)

Constable hopes that Trimmer will accept a copy of his little work, especially as it contains Suffolk scenery: a county very dear to them all. Trimmer must not think that Constable forgets for a moment his engagement to paint him a picture - in fact it was on the canvas - but Constable's secular concerns are far too mighty for the peaceful habits of an artist. He wishes for hours of quiet that never come.

Constable grievously misses his friend John Dunthorne, who was always calm, just and wise, and a delightful instructor of his boys in astronomy.

They have had a delightful May. Constable had never seen any thing so lovely as the skies and trees: things he liked so much better than masses of brick butts.

Constable concludes by sending his best compliments to Mrs Trimmer and all their family
