Content Description
Gilbert owes Fry an additional debt of gratitude because he had been under the impression that the commission [for the salt cellar] had been his. In mitigation of any blame Fry may feel he deserves, he explains that the convention is for the artist to receive a third of the agreed sum on the giving of the commission, a third on completion, and a third on delivery, with an advance made for the purchase of materials, where precious metals are concerned. He hopes this may enable Fry to give a fuller justification to the Master of his Company [the Merchant Taylors'].
