Content Description

Providing a detailed account of the last years of an un-named "unfortunate person". She assures him that for two years prior to her death this person had "one hundred a year clear". Her good friend, Mr Darly, nursed her to her death.

Unfortunately she has learnt that this person was in extreme distress during 1787. When Scawen's brother had left Paris for India she "went off" with a Mr. Charles Pigit, proclaiming that she would not be carried off to India. Nothing was then heard of her until 1789 when she asked for £100. Scawen offered £50 as long as she went into a convent. She took high displeasure at the convent bit, but accepted the money. Scawen's brother then sent some money for her, but the draft was contested. Scawen then failed to secure this person an annuity after the death of her brother in India. The interest on £1000 invested funds was then offered. It was this, together with £60 per ann. from her own family that made up her last income.

Scawen avoided corresponding with her, although one last letter showed a softening of her mind. She thanks Humphry for the entertainment her offered the other morning and hopes to see more of the apartments in the Queen's House.
