The journey occured in January 1797. An early post-chaise took them to Amesbury, where they struggled to find anywhere to stay the night. The next day they visited Stonehenge. They then met Beckford who showed them the grounds of Fonthill, designed and executed by
Lord Chatham and C. Hamilton.
Inclement weather then kept them indoors and West complete a sketch of St. Anthony, which is to be finished in glass for the convent [Fonthill Abbey]. Beckford then showed them his countless treasures.
On their return journey they dined at Salisbury with the Mayor and Corporation, after viewing the Cathedral with its new improvements.
On January 3rd 1797 two of the large upright stones supporting the entablature fell, without earthquake, storm or any real cause. Further investigation found that half a mile from the spot there was a rabbit warren.
