Historical Background

A proposal to open the annual exhibition in the evening had been made unsuccessfully in 1851. Following the receipt of the memorial of May 1861, however, evening opening commenced in June 1862 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 to 10 pm, at a reduced price of sixpence for admission and sixpence for a special smaller catalogue.
