The Committee was appointed by the General Assembly of 23 January 1856 "to examine into and report on the state of the Schools". Although the committee communicated with the Council as it deliberated, and laid its final report before them on 22 May 1858, the report itself was approved without comment and ordered to be laid before General Assembly.
