Historical Background

In January 1972 the Loan Exhibitions Advisory Panel was disbanded and a new Exhibitions Committe formed, comprised entirely of Academicians. Initially this group was a sub-Committee of the briefly powerful Policy Advisory Committee, but by May of the same year it had become a full sub-Committee of Council and has remained so ever since.

Other special purpose committees popped briefly into view during the 1970s, such as one to look into exhibitions in the Diploma Galleries. But with the arrival of Norman Rosenthal in 1978 all exhibitions came under the remit of the Exhibitions Committee. Chaired by an Academician (not the President), the committee took charge of the consideration of exhibition proposals and making recommendations to Council, also accepting reports from the Exhibition Secretary as exhibitions developed. The committee's remit, or terms of reference, were altered over the years without fundamentally altering it purpose and functioning.

This committee was formerly superceded by the Exhibitions & Displays Committee (RAA/PC/7/2/5) in June 2022.
