The office of Keeper was created at the foundation of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. It carried overall responsibility for the Royal Academy Schools and (originally) its servants. The first holder of the office was
George Michael Moser (1768-83). Only Academicians were eligible for the Keepership until 1945. After that, Associates became eligible, though none was elected. In 1873 the term of office was limited to five years, and, in 1927, to three years. Re-election is permitted and usual while the holder is still eligible and willing to serve.
