Historical Background

The Hampton Court Committee was appointed by the Council of 8 July 1919, to investigate restorations of paintings by Mantegna at Hampton Court Palace, following a letter from Henry Woods.

Content Description

Copy of the report of the Hampton Court Committee to the President and Council, describing the restoration of paintings by Mantegna there as "lamentable" and as betraying "deplorable incompetence", and making recommendations about their future housing, 29 July 1919. The report is signed by the President, Sir Aston Webb, Henry Woods, Walter William Ouless, A. S. Cope, Charles Sims, Charles Shannon and Herbert Hughes-Stanton. Also, copy of covering letter from the Secretary to Viscount Sandhurst, "in the hope that the advice given may be useful in any future consideration of the condition of old paintings in His Majesty's collections", 7 August 1919.
