Although an utter stranger he writes as, having spotted her daughter while at a service in Westminster Abbey, he wishes to paint her as Joan of Arc in a historical picture he is completing. He hopes she will agree to his taking a skecth of her daughter's face. The bearer is his neice, who lives with him.
