References
On Robinson's influence see H.E. Davies, Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913): his role as a connoisseur and creator of public and private collections [dissertation, Univy. Oxford] (1992); Italian Drawings from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford [exhibition catalogue] (1970).
Summary Note
The half-title reads, 'The Drawings Of Michel Angelo And Raffaello In The University Galleries, Oxford.'
This was one of the first catalogues raisonnées of a group of drawings, and was made by one of the nineteenth century's leading connoisseurs. Much of the Ashmolean Museum's holding of the drawings of Michelangelo and Raphael was formerly in the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A.
The eight pages of illustrations show papermarks.
Binding Note
19th-century brown cloth-covered boards, upper cover lettered in gilt, 'The Drawings By Michel Angelo And Raffaello In The University Galleries Oxford.'; spine lettered 'Michel Angelo And Raffaello - Oxford J.C.Robinson'.
