Summary Note

The text lists 778 items, made of 'Coade stone' (a weather-resistant ceramic material) in Neoclassical style. (Most were designed by the sculptor, John Bacon, R.A., who worked for the firm from ca. 1771 to his death in 1799.)

Coade stone was very widely used, and examples may be seen not only in London and Britain (e.g. Buckingham Palace, Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich) but also in Washington DC (Octagon), Rio de Janeiro (Zoo) and elsewhere.

Provenance

The title-plate verso of the set of plates with which this Descriptive Catalogue is bound carries the bookplate of John Yenn, and its title plate is inscribed in pencil, 'John Yenn RA'.

Copy Note

The text is annotated in ink, usually indicating alterations to the descriptions of the items or their prices. The last note reads, 'Since the publication of this Catalogue above 200 articles have been added to the Manufactory and are continually increasing from New Designs -'.

Binding Note

19th-century half brown morocco, brown cloth-covered boards; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'Coade's Lithodipyra' and 'R.A.' Bound with 'Coade's Lithodipyra or Artificial-Stone Manufactory' (n.d.).
