Summary Note
In 1834 Franz Kugler had been appointed professor of art history at the University of Berlin - the first European chair in this subject. Kugler's Handbuch der Geschichte der Malerei, von Constantin dem Grossen bis auf die neuere Zeit had been published in 1837. This volume is a translation into English by Margaret Hutton of the second part only of Kugler's Handbuch, edited by Sir Edmund Head. The first part had appeared in 1841 under the editorship of Charles Lock Eastlake R.A. (q.v.). In 1848 Head went on to publish A handbook of the history of the Spanish and French schools of painting, his own rewriting of that section of Kugler's text. The first complete English translation of Kugler, edited once again by Head, was published in 1854.
This part of the history is presented in five books: I. 9th to 13th century; II. 13th to 15th century; III. 15th and 16th century; IV. 16th century; V. 17th century.
