The title-pages of Volumes III and IV read, 'Notes Sur Trois Livres De Pline L'Ancien, Où Il Traite De La Peinture Et De La Sculpture. On Y A Joint La Traduction De Ces Mêmes Livres, comme piece justicative des Notes, pour deux qui ne lisent pas l'Auteur dans sa langue. In these two volumes Falconet argues that Pliny the Elder, like other non-artists, was not competent to write about the visual arts. The other four volumes contain all Falconet's essays and a few of his letters - including (Vol. I) 'Reflexions sur la sculpture', 'Observations sur la statue de Marc-Aurele' and (Vol. V) 'Quelques idées sur le Beau dans l'Art'. Many passages in these essays are best understood in the light of his extensive correspondence with Diderot. Falconet also maintained a correspondence with Empress Catherine II of Russia, who commissioned his most famous work, the bronze equestrian statue of the Emperor Peter I.
Provenance
Acquired in 1872. The half-titles of Vols. I-IV, VI and the title-page of Vol. V are inscribed in ink, 'Westmacott'. The half-title of Vol. I is also inscribed in pencil, 'The gift of the widow of Richard Westmacott RA 1872 -'. The verso of the front loose endpaper of Vol. I is inscribed in pencil, 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.
