General Note
The work was edited and completed by Arthur Milman, one of the author's sons. The frontispiece is an engraving by Holl of the portrait of Dean Milman by George Frederic Watts. Printer statement on the verso of the title-page: 'London: Printed by Spottiswoode and Co., New-Street Square and Parliament Street'.
Provenance
On half-title page an inscription in ink: 'For the Library of the Royal Academy' with a facsimile signature of the author pasted to the page. Loosely inserted into the front of the volume is a hand-written letter on Sion College, London, notepaper from the Reverend William Henry Milman (eldest son of the author), who donated the copy of the work to the Royal Academy.
