Summary Note
The Preface is signed by Robert J.A. Hay, and reads, 'This Collection ... was formed in Egypt by my Father, the late Mr. Robert Hay on Linplum, East Lothian, between the years 1828 and 1833 ... The Catalogue was drawn up by my brother, Mr. James Hay ... under the experienced superintendence of Mr. Joseph Bonomi. It is now my intention to dispose of this Collection.'
Robert Hay had made recording exhibitions to Egypt during 1824-8 and 1829-34, with Joseph Bonomi the younger, F. Catherwood, F. Arundale, C. Laver and O. Browne Carter. The notes of these exhibitions remain in the British Museum; but in 1840 Hay published his Illustrations of Cairo. A small number of Hay's Egyptian antiquities were bought by the British Museum in 1868; the rest were bought in 1872 for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
