Originally published as the preliminary treatise to the Library of Useful Knowledge and 'Published under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge' (as indicated on the title-page on the front wrapper). The printer statement is found on the verso of the front wrapper: 'London: Printed by W. Clowes, Stamford Street.'

Inscription in ink in the upper right-hand corner of the front wrapper: 'Rich Westmac[ott]' (the end of the signature was lost when the pamphlet was bound in the volume).
