General Note
This publication is a much enlarged version of an essay Hall presented to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1797 which was first printed in their Transactions (IV:2, 1798, p. 3-27) and subsequently reprinted separately. The engraved frontispiece depicts a miniature Gothic cathedral made by Hall of wicker and drawn by A. Carse.
