βIt has been suggested to the Council of the Society, that among the visitors to the Annual Exhibition there will be many who, not perhaps having made a special study of print, will be interested to have a short description of the characteristics of the various forms of etching and engraving. It is in the hope that such a want may be supplied that the President has ventured to put together the following notes, trusting that, should they fall into the hands of practiced collectors, he may be forgiven for entering into the many small points which they know as matters of course, but which are often difficulties to a beginner.β [Preface].
