Summary Note

Jonathan Richardson the elder was best-known as a portrait-painter and writer on art; but he was also interested in literature. The publication of his notes on Milton's Paradise Lost may have been prompted by the publication of Richard Bentley's edition in 1732.

The frontispiece shows a portrait drawing of Milton, captioned with a quotation from his Latin poem, 'Mansus'.
