Summary Note

James Thomson's poem, The Castle of Indolence, had been published in London in 1748. It satirised himself and his friends, living in the Castle of Indolence - which in the second canto is overthrown by the Knight of Industry.

The translator, T.J. Mathias, was best known in Britain as a satirist; but he was also a scholar of Italian and spent the last eighteen years of his life in Naples. According to a notice in The Athenaeum for 22 August 1835 the Neapolitans praised the 'purity and precision' of his Italian.
