Summary Note
The publication-date of 1852 is carried by the title-plate and most plates; that of 1851 appears on the first eleven plates (and pl. [6] is dated in the plate '1849').
All plates are captioned. The subjects of most are from Greek mythology, as treated in the Iliad, the Greek dramatists and the Aeneid. But some have general subjects, such as 'Mother and Child' or 'Design for a Monument'. Plate [[8] has the Christian subject, 'Suffer the little children to come unto me'.
