Summary Note

The work had first been published in 1624.

There are fifty-two emblemata, each consisting of an image accompanied by a text in Dutch verse and prose. The images show everyday Dutch life and customs, and derive from contemporary Dutch genre paintings by Adriaen van de Venne.

Provenance

The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S.A.H.', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.
