Summary Note

The work had first been published in French only in Paris in 1682, and had soon been accepted as the most accurate account of the ancient buildings of Rome.

An English translation, The ancient buildings of Rome, had been published in 1795.

According to Ridley, 525 copies of this Italian edition were printed.

Provenance

The front pastedown carries the 19th-century armorial bookplate of George John Vulliamy, and the 19th-century bookplate of George Aitchison, A.R.A.(on which the date 1887 has been inscribed in ink). It is also inscribed in ink 'George Aitchison 16 March 1887'. Bequeathed from the library of Sir Edwin Cooper, 1961.

Copy Note

Imperfect. The text calls for 25 chapters, but the Academy's copy has only five (pp. 1-40, pl. 1-37), describing the Pantheon and the temples of Bacchus, Faunus and Vesta in Rome and that of Vesta at Tivoli.

Binding Note

19th-century half calf, black cloth-covered boards; brown morocco spine-label lettered 'Édifices Antiques De Rome', spine lettered 'Desgodetz.' and 'Rome 1822'.
