Summary Note
This publication is known to exist in at least two states. In state 1 the signature on leaf B1 is under "esemplare" and that on leaf E1 is under "squisita"; in state 2 the signature on leaf B1 is under "gran stile" and that on leaf E1 is under "con." The Royal Academy's copy is in the second state. Cicognara also records an issue on 'carta grande velina d'Inghilterra'.
The plates are all outline drawings. The frontispiece and plates 1-31 show sepulchral monuments in Florence; plates 32-47 show monuments in neighbouring towns (Fiesole, S. Miniato, S. Francesco di Paola, Certosa, Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Pistoia, Lucca, Prato, Volterra). They are the work of designers of many periods, from Roman sarcophagi to Canova.
The title-plate carries the monogram 'GG', presumably indicating the publisher Giuseppe Gonnelli.
