Summary Note
There is no title-plate; our title is supplied by the caption of plate 1. All plates are captioned in Latin.
The plates show the nine canvases by Mantegna of the triumph of Julius Caesar after his campaigns in Gaul; which were painted some time between 1486 and 1505 probably for one of the Gonzaga family of Mantua.
The paintings were bought from the Gonzaga by King Charles I in 1629, and by 1631 were in Britain. Today they may be seen in the royal collection at Hampton Court.
