Summary Note
The publication-dates of the three volumes are given on their title-pages as 1754, 1757 and 1759. The title of the third volume omits the words 'Scritte ... al XVII.' The imprints of Volumes II and III read 'Appresso Niccolò, E Marco Pagliarini ...'.
A further three volumes were published to 1768. These are attributed to Gio. Bottari, who signs the Approvazione of these first three volumes. A seventh volume, by L. Crespi, was published in 1773; and further volumes, by S. Ticozzi, were published in 1822.
Bottari had collected books, prints and drawings for Pope Clement XII, and drawings for Cardinal Corsini, and was a friend of engravers and other artists in Rome. He had published dialogues on art and design and accounts of catacombs and the Palatine Museums before bringing out this celebrated Raccolta di lettere as a tool for art historians and biographers. The letters address not only art theory but also questions of restoration, collecting and record-keeping; and include many writings of Bottari's contemporaries.
