Summary Note
Each plate shows two heads - taken from Raphael's seven cartoons depicting two events from the Gospels and five from the Acts of the Apostles.
They are reproduced from those published in 1722 by Marie Maugis, but are placed in a different order.
The text of Benjamin Ralph's 'Description' concentrates on composition and the expressiveness of figures and heads, and exemplifies the eighteenth-century concern with 'sensibilité'. His index is an index of emotions, ranging from 'Affection; Agony ... ' to 'Wonder and astonishment; Zeal'.
Provenance
Recorded in RAA Library, Catalogue, 1802.
Binding Note
18th-century marbled-papered boards; rebacked and recornered in calf in 1990; red morocco spine-label lettered 'Cartons Of Raphael Urbin'.
