Summary Note
The plates show one view and restorations of the plan, elevation, sections and architectural details of the whole Altis at Olympia or of the temple of Zeus. Two plates show statues - an imaginary reconstruction of Phidias's Zeus and a photograph of Praxiteles's Hermes.
The print-run is indicated in a note printed on the half-title verso: 'Cet Ouvrage A Été Tiré A Cinq Cents Exemplaires Numérotés - Exemplaire No ' (in the Royal Academy's copy the number 177 has been stamped in).
Victor Laloux is best-known for his design of the façade of the Gare d'Orsay, Paris.
Provenance
The front pastedown is inscribed in pencil, 'J.E.H', i.e. John Evan Hodgson, librarian of the Royal Academy 1882-95. Purchased for RA Library in 1889 (see RA Annual Report for 1889, p. 45).
