Summary Note

The six plates illustrate incidents in the historical novel, Rob Roy, by Sir Walter Scott (first published in 1817). Each carries a caption, which is repeated in the List of Engravings and at the head of the accompanying leaf of letter-press text, which carries a short extract from the novel. They show: 1. 'Cattle Lifting' (Introduction); 2. 'Diana Vernon And Frank Osbaldistone In The Library - The Glove Scene' (Chap. XVII.); 3. 'Rob Roy Parting The Duellists Rashleigh And Francis Osbaldistone' (Chap. XXV.); 4. 'The Clachan Of Aberfoil And Loch Ard - Morning' (Chap. XXX.); 5. 'The Escape Of Rob Roy At The Ford' (Chap. XXXIII.); 6. 'Loch Lomond' (Chap. XXXVI.). These subjects allow the artists to show not only figures but also the Scottish country.
