Physical Description
[134] pages: illus.; 220 mm.
General Note
Facsimile of the sketch-book containing studies and notes made by Inigo Jones during a visit to Italy in 1614. The first page of the original has the inscription: 'Roma: Altro diletto che Imparar non trouo / Inigo Jones / 1614'. The following leaf in this copy of the facsimile is a copy of the 1762 print by Alexander Bannerman after the portrait of Jones by Sir Anthony van Dyck. The studies and notes cover 42 leaves (3-11, 13-20, 22-23, 25-26, 27-35, 42-54); the rest of the leaves are blank. The facsimile is reproduced from the original in the possession of the Duke of Devonshire. Only a hundred copies were printed for the Duke and were presented by him as presents.
Provenance
This copy is inscribed in the hand of William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire: 'the Honble Mrs George Lamb is requested by the Duke of Devonshire to accept this attempted fac simile of Inigo Jones's Sketch book.'
Also present, pasted onto a front loose endpaper, is a cutting from an unidentified bookseller's catalogue detailing this copy of the facsimile.
