Summary Note
The work had first been published in 1806 as Essays on the Anatomy of Expression in Painting. In the present edition the first plate carries the dates of 1803 (for the drawing) and 1806 (for the engraving).
The plates show: 1. Human skulls; 2. Human facial muscles; 3. Canine facial muscles; 4. Nerves of the human head.

Binding Note
19th-century blue cloth, upper and lower covers decorated in blind; rebacked in 1989 by A. Wessely, retaining earlier spine-piece lettered 'Anatomy Of Expression - Sir C. Bell' and 'London John Murray'.
