Five plates (nos. [2, 5, 13, 15, 25] are signed as designed and executed by William Warrington; one of these (pl. [15]) carries also the name of the architect, F.W. Ainslie, and one (pl. [25]) that of the architect William Railton. All plates are signed as lithographed by T.J. Rawlins, except the added title-plate, which is signed as lithographed by W. Warrington. Most are signed as printed by M. and N. Hanhart, but two are signed as printed by T. Moody.

Summary Note
The publication-date of 1848 is carried by the title-page; but most plates carry earlier dates - of 1843, 1844, 1845, 1847.
Warrington was one of the first British stained-glass artists working in the Gothic Revival style. From 1837 to 1841 he worked with A.W.N. Pugin. Most of his text is a history of stained glass in Britain and elsewhere in Europe from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, with a shorter section on its history from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.
Unusually Warrington chooses to illustrates the succession of styles mainly with modern examples by himself or others - a method which attracted much adverse criticism.
