Summary Note

The Revd Evan Lloyd was commissioned to write a laudatory Ode, set to music by the organist and composer James Hook, to celebrate the first exhibition of the Society of Artists at their new exhibiting room near Exeter Exchange in the Strand. The Ode was performed at the grand opening on 8th May 1772. Leading soloists performed the arias accompanied by a large chorus of eighteen singers and thirty-nine strong orchestra led by the celebrated Italian violist Felice Giardini.
