Summary Note
No publication-date is given on the title page, but most plates carry publication dates, ranging from 1753 [pl. [24]) to 1786 (pl. [20]). The publishers, 'Boydell And Co.' began styling themselves thus in 1787, when John Boydell took his nephew Josiah as a partner.
The plates show paintings, drawings or prints by Baillie himself (11 pl.) or by Hone (3 pl.), Terburg (2 pl.), Netcher, Rubens (5 pl.), Van Dyke (2 pl.), Rembrandt (17 pl.), G. Dou (7 pl.), Sophonisba Angusciola, F. Mieris, F. Hals, Guido, Zuccharo, A. v. Ostade (9 pl.), S. Rosa, C. Dusart (2 pl.), Geraart, D. Teniers (2 pl.), Valentini, Le Nain, Molinaer, N. Poussin (2 pl.), A. Milani, Domer, W. Van de Velde (3 pl.), Ruisdael, Van Goien (2 pl.), Molyn (3 pl.), Van der Meer, Berghem, Cuyp, Guido (2 pl.), Franceschini (2 pl.), Domenichino, Correggio, Parmigiano (2 pl.), Sabbadini, Luti, B. Schidone, Romanelli, Guercino, Segers, Cipriani, Rottenhammer, Ekhout. For three plates the names of the source-artists are not given.
Baillie became particularly well-known for his prints of Rembrandt's graphic works. In his third copy of Rembrandt's print, 'Three trees' he added forked lightning, and in his last copy extended this to two forks of lightning (see pl. [59]). He owned three Rembrandt plates; and reworked the worn 'The hundred-guilder print' (see pl. [99-102]). (This plate is also known as, 'Christ with the sick around Him receives little children'.)
The 'Catalogue Of Prints' ends with the publisher's price-list for various formats of the work.
Copy Note
All plates have been inscribed in pencil, in an unknown hand, with the number and title printed in the Catalogue Of Prints. In the same hand the title page is inscribed in pencil, 'J.H. Smith Caradoc Lodge, Church Stretton.'
Binding Note
19th-century red morocco, gilt-decorated upper and lower covers; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'Captain Baillie's Works'.
