The title-plate has been pasted in. It carries the publication-date of 1643; but plates carry the dates of 1642, 1643, 1644 or 1663.

Each print is captioned in Latin at the foot; some are also captioned in English at the head.

Provenance

The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of 'E.F. Stratton Reader'. The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.

Copy Note

The title-plate has been pasted in. Between the title plate and the plates is a leaf inscribed in ink on its recto, 'Costvmes - Of · The - Seventeenth · Centvry - Engraved by - Winceslavs Hollar - 1643-1663 -'. A preliminary leaf carries a faint, illegible inscription.

Binding Note

19th-century half white vellum, marbled-papered boards; gilt-decorated spine, green morocco spine-label lettered 'Hollar Costumes', spine lettered '1643'.
