In Volume I the frontispiece is signed as drawn by D. Piola and engraved by Guid[otti]. The added engraved title-plate and most in-text illustrations are signed as drawn by Giuseppe Ratti and engraved by (Gio. Lore.) Guidotti (Lucchese). Soprani's account of Genovese artists and foreign artists working in Genoa was first published in 1674. Ratti's revision brings the story up to his own times.
Apart from the frontispiece and added engraved title-plate in Volume I the publication has no plates, but most biographies are illustrated with an in-text engraved portrait.
Provenance
The front pastedown of Volume I is inscribed in pencil, 'S.A.H.', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.
