RA Collection: People and Organisations
Born in northern Italy in 1790, Giuseppe Fabris was sent to Rome on a grant awarded by his home province of Nove di Bassano. There he was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca after showing a sculpture of Milo of Croton. In 1832 Fabris succeeded Antonio d’Este as director general of the Vatican museums, during which time he sculpted a marble bust of Raphael. A cast of this bust is in the RA collection. Fabris also decorated the new Museo Egizio, opened in 1839 to display Egyptian antiquities in Rome, in a style inspired by the objects on display. Fabris was appointed correspondent of the Institut de France in 1846, and died in Rome in 1860.
