Painter of portraits and landscapes, illustrator; author of children’s books.
Son of Gideon “George” Slous (1777–1839), a Flemish portrait and miniature painter, and a pupil of the English Romantic painter, engraver and illustrator, John Martin (1789-1854). He married Emily Elizabeth (d. 1879), daughter of the successful miniature painter Henry Pierce Boneat, at St Pancras Parish Church on 4 March 1837. They had four daughters.
In 1819 Selous entered the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited his first work at the RA in 1818, a Portrait of a Favourite Cat.
