RA Collection: People and Organisations
Anderdon was a banker and a collector of paintings, prints and autograph letters. He was the son of John Proctor Anderdon (1760-1846), and brother of Thomas Oliver Anderdon (1788-1856), both also collectors.
He compiled four extra-illustrated series now in the British Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings: Royal Academy of Arts and Society of Artists exhibition catalogues; Edwards’ Anecdotes of Painters and the “Collectanea Biographica”. Anderdon compiled a second set of the Royal Academy annual exhibition catalogues covering the period 1769-1850 which he presented to the Royal Academy Library in 1875.
RA Collections Decolonial Research Project - Extended Biography
The Legacies of British Slavery database has identified J.H. Anderdon as a beneficiary of the Transatlantic slave trade through his work as a partner in the bank of Bosanquet and Anderdon as well as through his own private investments and by inheritance from his father John Procter Anderdon and other family members (see Note 1).
