James Prinsep (1799 - 1840)

Indologist, scientist, assayer, architect. From 1819 to 1838 he worked in Calcutta and Varanasi. Son of businessman John Prinsep (1746-1830); brother of artist William Prinsep (1794-1874), artist Thomas Prinsep (1800-30), lawyer and economist Charles Robert Prinsep (1789-1864) and administrator Henry Thoby Prinsep (1792-1878); uncle of painter Valentine C. Prinsep, R.A. (1838-1904).
