Lysippus (fl. ca. 370 BC- ca. 300 BC)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

The Greek sculptor Lysippus (or Lysippos) was the greatest sculptor from the school at Sikyon, then an artistic centre second only to Athens. Ancient sources classed him as one of the most accomplished sculptors in bronze.

No original works by Lysippus survive, making it difficult to establish dates for his career, but literary sources indicate that he had a long and active career spanning much of the 4th century BC. Among his most famous works was a statue of a youth scraping himself, generally associated with a Roman marble copy, the Apoxyomenos. A cast of Apoxyomenos is in the RA collection.
