Reigned 1592-1627. A convert from Lutheranism to Calvinism (1605) he attempted to impose Calvinism on his subjects. He was a composer and writer, and a lover of the theatre, alchemy, astronomy and architecture; he commissioned the first permanent theatre in Germany, the Ottoneum (1604-5). He abdicated in 1627, in favor of his son, William V.
