Allen Lane (1902-1970) was a British publisher who is notable for founding publishing company Penguin Books in 1935. The foundation of Penguin brought high quality paperback fiction and non-fiction to the mass market. In 1967 he started a hardback print under his own name, Allen Lane. He also founded other companies such as Pelican books, Puffin books and Penguin classics.
