William John Cooke (1796 - 1865)

Line engraver of landscapes, born in Dublin, moved to England in 1798, pupil of his uncles William Bernard and George Cooke; engraved for popular annuals. Awarded gold medal in 1826 from Society of Arts for contribution to development of steel engraving. Left England in 1840 for Darmstadt where he died. Hunnisett thinks it doubtful that he was the nephew of engraver G. Cooke.
