Photographer. Adolphe Braun, 1812-1877, born in Besançon, France. Braun originally trained as a textile designer, he became involved with photography when he photographed still life studies of flowers with the aim of producing a reference work for other designers. Braun's photographic company Adolphe Braun et Cie was based in Paris, their work included portraits, landscapes, architecture as well as works of art. In 1867 Braun became the official photographer to Pope Pius IX and from 1868, a team lead by Braun's son Henri, photographed the Sistine Chapel and works in the Vatican Museums. (Braun's other son Guston 1845-1928, also a photographer, worked with Pierre-Louis Pierson, 1822-1913.)
